Chapter 31: The Decision

A figure walking through one of the castle’s many hallways…

It was pitch black. Indeed, at this odd hour of the morning, torches had long been doused. Guards patrolling were at a minimum. All out of town guests were asleep.

Except one.

Sneaking around probably wasn’t the best idea. Regardless, a message needed to be delivered, and it simply could not wait.

Standing at a doorway – confident this was the correct room – the door was slowly opened. Making a slight creak, the figure crept in, then gently pushed it closed. Approaching the bed gingerly for fear of making noise or stubbing a toe, the covers were pulled back enough to slip under them.

“Hey, are you awake? I messed up. I can’t apologize enough.”

There was no reply. Undeterred, he spoke more.

“I beg of your forgiveness.” Followed by, “Your love means everything to me.”

No response.

However, the figure on the other side of the bed moved.

Still no response.

“You are tired, I understand. Well, I am going to lay here next to you. I never want to leave your side.”

Jon fell into a deep sleep, with a smile on his face. After all, he was next to the woman he loved.

The following morning…

As sunlight peered in, Jon squinted ever so slightly. Awake finally, he licked his dry lips. Battling the morning fog in his mind, he now realized where he was. Smiling, he rolled over to address his love.

“Bandorus?!”

“Get out of our bed.”

Those were the only five words Jon needed to hear.

As he scampered out of the room, he embarrassingly yelled back, “Dammit, forget I was here!”

Leaving the room and shutting the door behind him, he turned and slammed right into the chest of a guard who happened to be walking by.

Sprawled out on the floor, Jon looked up with a goofy grin on his face.

“Mister Lommax, isn’t your room on the other side of the castle?”

“Well, sort of.”

With a disapproving scowl, the guard yanked him up and inquired, “What the hell were you doing in Bandorus’ room?”

As Jon paused, the guard quickly remarked, “Forget I asked.”

He then scolded him.

“You want me to bring you in front of Hadlot? He will not be pleased, as I am sure you can imagine.”

“Yes, I know. Well, thank you kind sir, I will be getting back to my room.”

“You sure will. Let’s go.”

With the guard following him to ensure Jon went to the correct room, he declared, “I have my eyes on you. Don’t leave your quarters again until someone comes to escort you to breakfast.”

“Of course, of course. Thank you.”

A fool in love has no boundaries.

As witnessed by…

Carefully climbing over the terrace attached to his room – as the hallway exit was now off limits – Jon slowly lowered himself on to the much larger terrace below. Brushing himself off, he felt quite smitten for evading the guard. He was going to speak to Joney, and no one was going to stop him!

Until…

“Jon, what are doing?”

The voice was unmistakable.

Turning around slowly, all Jon could do was give an awkward bow.
